Trust in God’s Mercy (Part 1)

What do you think about this New Year? Many wish to have a peaceful and prosperous New Year with good health. Many trust in their capacity, power or riches. Christians pray for God’s guidance, protection and blessings upon them and their loved ones. However, to trust in God’s mercy, even when not knowing what may happen to us tomorrow, is a firm foundation.

David was anointed to be king of Israel when he was a teenager (about 15 years old), keeping his father’s sheep, but he did not yet come to his throne then. He experienced God’s mercy, delivering him “out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear” when he bravely delivered his father’s sheep (1 Sam 17:37). With such precious experience, David bravely trusted in the Lord, who helped him defeat the giant Goliath while King Saul and his people “were dismayed, and greatly afraid” (1 Sam 17:11, 24, 45-51). After that David was envied and hunted for life by King Saul. Although encountering his future with a lot of challenges, difficulties and dangers, he composed Psalm 52, saying, “I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever” (v 8). Truly, by God’s mercy, later David became king of his tribe, Judah, when he was 23 years old (2 Sam 2:4) and officially became king of the whole nation Israel when he was 30 years old (2 Sam 5:4). King David praised the Lord, “Therefore I will give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and I will sing praises unto thy name. He is the tower of salvation for his king: and sheweth mercy to his anointed, unto David, and to his seed for evermore” (2 Sam 22:50-51). David was grateful to the Lord because He “sheweth mercy to” him just as he trusted.
