A Humble Heart (Part 1)
Many appear humble outwardly, but they are proud
and despise or criticize others in their hearts. When being praised,
“You are so talented, so nice, so rich, so skilful with your hands,
etc.” many humbly reply, “Nothing special!” but they are very proud of
themselves in their hearts. Many have high positions in society and like
others to greet them with great respect, “Professor, Doctor, Lawyer,
Teacher, Bishop, Reverend, etc…” and if someone does not greet them
properly, they are upset or angry in their hearts. Many want to get the
attention, praise or respect from others, so they try to show that they
are good, decent, polite, wealthy, elegant, smart, knowledgeable, and
always speaking well of themselves, their jobs, their property or
children, etc. Many only like to teach others, so they do not like to
hear others’ advice. Many are loved due to their humility, but when they
hear of God’s salvation for sinners who willingly repent, they want to
show that they have no sins, or if they do, they can still save
themselves without the Saviour Jesus Christ. Many say that they believe
in the Lord, but they doubt or have a low view of God’s Word. All such
people are not humble at all in God’s sight!
God’s Word confirms His blessings to the humble
and His punishment to the proud: “A man's pride shall bring him low:
but honour shall uphold the humble in spirit” (Prov 29:23), and
“And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall
humble himself shall be exalted” (Matt 23:12), and “God resisteth
the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” (James 4:6) and “For
thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name
is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a
contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to
revive the heart of the contrite ones” (Isa 57:15). Do you really
have a humble heart? Please read our next article.
