A Humble Heart (Part 6)

Dear friends, the more you know the Lord, even the holy and almighty Creator and know yourselves as sinful creatures, the more you will humble yourselves before Him to enjoy His grace and blessings as “God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble” (James 4:6). To keep yourselves humble, you have to look at the Lord Jesus Christ and read God’s Word.

Look at the Lord Jesus and Read God’s Word: If you look at the people around you and compare yourselves with them, you may be proud of yourselves as good and decent persons because you do not sin like them, nor tell lies, nor do wicked things, nor commit adultery, nor are drunk or rude like them, etc.  However, if you look at the Lord Jesus, the Holy One, and compare yourselves with Him, and if you read His Word like letting your hearts be reflected in a mirror, then your hearts and minds with your proud thoughts, sinful lusts, covetousness, hatred, envy, anger, bitterness, hypocrisy, selfish motives, etc., will be exposed in the light of God’s Word, and then you will see that you need His forgiveness and salvation. The Lord Jesus came to call sinners to repentance, but not those who think that they are righteous (Mark 2:17). The Lord Jesus tells a parable about two persons going up into the temple to pray: a Pharisee who is a hypocrite (Luke 12:1) and the other is a tax-collector. The Pharisee trusted in himself that he was righteous and despised others, prayed within himself, “God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican (tax-collector).”  But the tax-collector would not lift up his eyes to heaven and smote upon his chest, saying, “God, be merciful to me a sinner.” And the Lord Jesus concluded that the tax-collector was justified rather than the Pharisee, “for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted” (Luke 18:9-14).
