TREASURY OF SERMONS

By Faith Evolution Made The World
By Rev (Dr) Jeffrey Khoo
(Preached Calvary BPC Sunset Gospel Hour, Feb 15, 1998)

Text: Rom 1:16-32, Heb 11:1-3, 2 Pet 3:1-7

Evolution is not a science but a religion. Many refer to evolution as a science. They are totally mistaken. What is science? Science is knowledge by means of observation and experimentation. It is subjecting our observations to laboratory experiments to see if the things observed really do work. Many things can be tested by means of the scientific method, but not all things, certainly not evolution. Eg, can you put history into a test-tube? Evolution can’t be tested in a lab. It is something that goes way beyond science.

Evolution is really a religion or an ideology. It is a belief or faith system that attempts to explain the origins of the cosmos, and of human existence. It is the religion of the atheist. It is the faith of those who do not believe that God exists. Peter in his 2d epistle, 3:3-4 described these people:

They are scoffers or mockers (2 Pet 3:3a). This word "scoffers" is used a dozen times in the NT to speak of those who mock at Christ. John 1:1-3 says that Jesus Christ was there at the very beginning, and He created the world out of nothing. These scoffers will say, "You must be really stupid to believe that."

They are lustful people (2 Pet 3:3b). They reduce the human being into just another animal with all its earthly appetites. Eg, sex is spoken of as an appetite; you do it with whomever you like, and whenever you like, in whatever way you like (men with men, women with women, people with animals). The Lord has a lot to say about these people in Rom 1:18-32.

They are uniformitarians (2 Pet 3:4). They say there is really no such thing as creation. According to them the things that continue today are the things that have always been, and therefore always will be. In other words, since there is no creation in the present, there was no creation in the past. Since God is not seen to be creating today, He did not create in the past, nor will He do so in the future. Since we don’t see that there is a God today, there couldn’t have been a God in the past. The bottom line is this: God is a liar. He said He will come back, and thousands of years already, He hasn’t come, and He will not come. Just like He lied concerning His coming back to earth, He has also lied concerning His creating of the world in the beginning. Things exist today not because of supernatural creation (by God), but natural selection (by chance).

Evolution is a religion or a faith because it begins with the presupposition that there is no God. So the questions of human existence and destiny are answered naturally instead of supernaturally. We are no different from the animals. We are just a more intelligent animal, that’s all. When we die, that is the end. So live how you like, enjoy yourself while you can in any way you can; right way or wrong way, it really doesn’t matter.

Evolutionists pride themselves for being intelligent. So let’s think and reason together. Which faith system makes more sense? Evolutionism or Creationism?

No God Versus God

Can we explain the our existence without having God in the picture? Some people like the atheistic evolutionists would say yes. To those who say that there is no God, the Bible has only one thing to say: "You are a fool." Ps 14:1 says, "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God." The atheist is fooling himself when he says that God does not exist. Why? Because in the innermost recesses of his heart, the knowledge of God exists. Paul says, "Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them" (Rom 1:19). Man is not an animal devoid of the spirit. Man consists of two parts: body and soul. He is made in the image of God. He resembles God spiritually. As such, whether he likes it or not, he knows within him that God exists. He may chose to ignore this knowledge, or deny that this knowledge is true, but he cannot escape from the fact that he has an idea about God, and this innate knowledge proves the existence of God. How do you know a triangle has three sides? Simply because the triangle exists, and it is a 3-sided instrument.

It is also a fact that every human civilisation, primitive or advanced, has a form of religion or worship. Because of sin, the image of God is corrupted, not obliterated. Man knows God exists, but fails to know who He is exactly. So some worship nature: trees, birds, insects, animals, sun, moon, stars etc., others worship money, people, power, themselves. In this we are quite different from the animals. They do not have this ability to relate to spiritual realm. Eg, do you see the animals building a shrine, or having a worship system?

Some evolutionists may say, "Well, I am not atheistic, but theistic." I believe in God. The theistic evolutionist says that God created by means of evolutionary processes. Nothing can be further from the truth. Genesis tells us that God created in 6 literal days, not millions or billions of years. Exod 20:11 says, "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it." If the days of creation were millions of years, then the sabbath commandment would be ridiculous: work for 6 million years, then rest during the 7th millionth year? I don’t want this kind of a work-week. By the time you work for that long, you will rest for good whether you like it or not. To make sense, the days of creation have to be literal 24 hour days.

Chance Versus Design

Did the world come into existence by chance or by design? When we look at the world, we can see that it is not a chaotic system. Consider the solar system with all the planets orbiting round the sun in an fixed and orderly pattern. That’s why we call it a system isn’t it? ie. things are not haphazard and disorganised. We also have the water cycle (Eccl 1:6-7), And just look at our body! It is a marvelous thing. Our body contains multiple systems. Let’s just talk about one of them: the digestive system. Food goes into our mouth and goes down the food pipe (the door of wind pipe automatic closes when we swallow food), and if a grain of rice accidently goes into the wrong pipe, automatically you cough to expel the rice and get it back on the right track. And the food pipe has also an interesting mechanism, it pumps the food down (when you eat lying down, or upside down, the food goes to the stomach anyway and is not affected by gravity). Once in the stomach, the stomach produces all kinds of enzymes, acids, to break down the food into fine parts so that it can be absorbed by the small intestines. Whatever fluid is left it is absorbed by the large intestines. What remains is the useless stuff which is eventually passed out. Time doesn’t permit for us to talk about our visual system (eye), audio system (ear), nervous system, and how the brain processes information.

Can all these be due to chance? When we build our tall skyscrapers, we need the architect to design, the engineers to come and make sure everything is done according to plan, and the labourers to put all things together. Our HDB flats did not evolve, they are not a result of chance. It will be a great insult to Mr Lee Kuan Yew if I were to tell him that Singapore came about by chance, by fluke. Our SM will tell you, it takes a lot of planning and designing and actual building; a lot of blood, sweat and tears. If our simple buildings require a designer and maker, how much more the whole universe? It is absolutely illogical to say that we have come into existence by chance. That’s why evolution is not scientific. True science involves logical thinking, and procedures. Evolution is not only atheistic, but utterly illogical. Their understanding has been blinded by sin and rebellion against the almighty God who created heaven and earth.

Imagination Versus Evidence

Is evolution based on evidence? The answer is no. The faith of evolution is truly a leap of faith. It goes against (1) the evidence of Scripture. Gen 1:1 states unequivocally and emphatically, "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." He created them ex nihilo (out of nothing), by divine fiat (the Word of His mouth), "for He commanded and they were created;" "Let there be light, and there was light." And He did all this in a space of 6 literal days. The evolutionist say this can’t be true or correct. The question is: In whom do you want to trust and believe in? In getting someone to tell you what happened at the very beginning, would you have Someone who was there in the first place, who made it all to tell you all about it, or someone who wasn’t there at all? If your life depends on the testimony of someone who can clear your name in a court of law, would you rather have an eyewitness or a dreamer to testify of your innocence? I’ll take the eyewitness any time! I’d rather trust in what God says in His Word than the word of Darwin who wasn’t even a speck of dust when the world was created, and who was a God-hater when he finally came into this world. Darwin did not like the idea of a God who holds man accountable for his sins. So he tried to dispose of God by explaining away creation. No creation, no God, no judgment.

Not only is evolution against the evidence of Scripture, it is against the evidence of Nature. Evolutionists say that earth’s history points to millions of years of change and progress. That is not true at all. The history of the earth is a relatively short one of about 6,000 years: Adam to Abraham is 2,000 years, Abraham to Christ is 2,000, and Christ till now another 2,000 years. Also geology shows evidence that the world went through a great cataclysmic deluge that left the world in a devastated condition. The Grand Canyon in USA, the fossils embedded in sedimentary rocks, the petrified forests can only be explained by a world-wide flood that happened in the days of Noah. I’d like to recommend that you read Dr John C Whitcomb’s classic--The Genesis Flood.

Evolution is also against the laws of science, eg, the laws of thermodynamics. The 1st law of thermodynamics says that nothing is now being created or annihilated. Everything is being conserved. That is true. God who created it all is now conserving it all as far as quantity is concerned. One state of matter can be changed to another (water to ice), one type of energy can be converted to another (electric energy to light energy), but the total quantity of mass energy is always conserved. Science can observe this law at work, but can’t tell us why it is so. The Bible has the answer in Col 1:16, "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, . . . And he is before all things, and by him all things consist (or are sustained or conserved). Evolution is against the laws of science because it refuses to acknowledge the divine factor in natural phenomenon.

There is also the 2nd law of thermodynamics which states that everything tends to decay. As time passes, order, organisation, and complexity tend to decrease. Things grow old, wear out, and finally die. Some of us hope we will grow or look younger and younger, but the fact is we grow older and older, weaker and weaker until we finally die. Everything goes downhill. Evolution says the opposite: things get better and better, stronger and stronger. Chimpanzees eventually become homo sapiens, human beings, they say. This is impossible according to the laws of science. Evolution is not scientific. It is extremely speculative. It is blind faith on a system based on a very fertile imagination of a sinfully depraved and corrupted mind. It is no wonder many scientists today reject the atheistic explanations of evolutionism. Though many today admit that there is or can be a God, they say that He cannot be known. From being atheistic, they become agnostic which is no better.

As Christians we know who God is and who we are; where we come from, why we are here, and where we are going. The Bible has all the answers! We know the truth and the truth has set us free. It is not blind faith because our faith is based on fact, on truth, on reality—"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

If you want to know the meaning of life, then you must believe in Jesus Christ. You don’t see in order to believe, you believe in order to see because spiritual things are spiritually discerned. Without God, the simple questions in life become incredibly difficult, but with God in your life, the difficult questions about life becomes easy: Eg, Did Adam have a navel or belly button? Answer: No! He wasn’t born, but carefully and wonderfully made by God from the dust of the earth as a full-grown man. Did durians have thorns in the very beginning? Answer: No!. Thorns came as a result of sin, a curse because of the fall. Which comes first the chicken or the egg? Answer: chicken! Read Gen 1:19, 22. Anyway, without the chicken the egg can’t hatch.
